The Power of Your Words
by Junior Blogger -Tessa Lang
There is power in the words a person speaks. Words determine the future, whether positive or negative.
“Where the mind goes, the man follows.” -Proverbs 23:7
Faith is solely based upon belief, and the same principle applies to daily life in speech and in thought. There are two realms that people face: the physical (which is seen on earth) and the spiritual (that is, the forces unseen). Believers in Christ know, without a doubt, the spiritual realm is real because God’s handiwork can be seen, even in the midst of difficult times, with affirmations crossed into the physical realm. Words take root in the spiritual realm.
“So is my word: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
God designed us to speak life.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” -Ephesians 6:12
We have an enemy whose sole purpose is to rob God’s people of their lives because “he came to steal, kill, and destroy”, (John 10:10). He has many schemes against us, one is by placing negative thoughts in the mind. He deceives people into believing the dismal thoughts he has placed in their path, either spoken by people with careless words or self-imposed thinking born out of bad choices, circumstances or goals not met. Negative thoughts seem to be and often are, easier to give in to-rather than the challenge of life-speaking ones. The real challenge is to recognize the attack. We must re-evaluate what the situation really is, and resist taking the bait that leads to negativity. We must purpose to speak and believe life-giving thoughts. It is a daily choice, and at the times-a moment by moment choice. If you find yourself challenged and are struggling with knowing the difference between the two, ask yourself “does this mindset bring life and life abundantly, or did this come to steal, kill, and destroy?”.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” -1 Peter 5:8
How exactly do “life-speaking” words affect our future? They can bring either life or death. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” -Proverbs 8:21. Speaking life over yourself and others not only improves your perspective and health but does the same for others. The words we speak have the opportunity to change the world one positive thought and word at a time. How will you choose to impact the world?
